History at a Glance
According to Hindu Mythology, on this special day, the God of Death (Yamraj) visited his sister named Yami (Yamuna). His sister welcomed him by aarti and tilak ceremony and also offered him some delicious dishes. In return, Yamraj declared that on this day brothers would visit their sisters and sisters would pray for the happiness of their brothers. According to another mythological story around Bhai Dooj, Lord Krishna had returned to his sister named Subhadra after killing a demon named Narakasur. His sister welcomed him by offering him tilak, aarti, flowers, and sweets.

This age-old festival is known as Bhai Bij, Bhau beej, or Bhav Bij in the states of Gujrat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka; Bhai Phonta in West Bengal, and Bhai Tika in Nepal (celebrated by Newari, Maithali, Tharu, Bahun and Chhetri people.)
